Activities to protect and commercialize new intellectual properties include: new invention disclosures, patents issued, licenses & options executed and start-up companies formed.
Researchers at higher education institutions file invention disclosure forms with their institutions to initiate the process of protecting discoveries made while conducting research. Institutional review of these disclosures determines which inventions the institution will protect and commercialize using available resources. Higher education institutions typically apply for patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which legally grants property rights that exclude others from making, using, or selling the intellectual property. Further development and commercialization of intellectual property is frequently accomplished through licensing agreements between private companies and higher education institutions. (THECB)

The number of teaching load credits for a faculty member are based primarily on time spent in the classroom. For example, teaching a three hour course would yield three teaching load credits. Other activities may earn teaching load credits, e.g., more credits are assigned for large classes or writing intensive courses; credits may also be assigned for directing graduate students, editing a major journal, or extraordinary involvement in administration, etc.
Tuition and fees are revenues from all tuition and fees assessed against students (net of refunds and discounts & allowances) for educational purposes. If tuition or fees are remitted to the state as an offset to the state appropriation, the total of such tuition or fees should be deducted from the total state appropriation and added to the total for tuition and fees. If an all-inclusive charge is made for tuition, board, room, and other services, a reasonable distribution is made between revenues for tuition and fees and revenues for auxiliary enterprises. Tuition and fees excludes charges for room, board, and other services rendered by auxiliary enterprises.
