Emerging Research Universities (ERUs)

Designated by the THECB, Emerging Research Universities are a set of Texas public universities that have a growing research enterprise and an expanding focus on graduate students. These Texas ERUs include four UT System institutions: UTA, UTD, UTEP, and UTSA. The UT System ERUs have Basic Carnegie Classification of R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity. Find out more about Emerging Research Universities.

Enrollment (fall) - (used by THECB)

Fall enrollment numbers reflect all students enrolled at the reporting institution as of the official census date, which is the 12th class day for the fall semester. Students who withdraw from a class on or before the official census date are not included.

Enrollment (fall) - (used by IPEDS)

Total men and women enrolled for credit in the fall of the academic year.

Endowment

A permanent investment in the future of a university. Endowed funds are invested, rather than used as cash for immediate needs. A portion of the earnings from an endowment is distributed to the university. The remainder is added back into principal, ensuring steady growth of the endowment.

Effect of CAP on Graduation Rates

Institutions with large numbers of CAP students (e.g., UTA, UTSA) will see a negative impact on their traditional, 4-year, same graduation rates—since these students will not graduate from the original institution from which they initially enrolled. However, upon graduating from UT Austin, these CAP graduates are included in the original UT institution’s (not UT Austin’s) 4, 5, or 6-year, same or other rate.
